Papa Francesco è arrivato ad Amatrice. Il Pontefice ha raggiunto la città simbolo del terremoto a bordo di una Golf con i vetri oscurati ed è entrato nella scuola provvisoria realizzata dalla Protezione civile del Trentino per incontrare alunni e insegnanti. Il Papa è giunto alle 9.10 ad Amatrice, accompagnato dal vescovo di Rieti mons. Domenico Pompili per rendere visita alle popolazioni vittime del terremoto del 24 agosto. In visita in forma strettamente privata, è stato accolto dagli studenti delle elementari e delle medie che gli hanno donato alcuni disegni. Francesco li ha abbracciati e salutati uno ad uno e si è intrattenuto con loro ad ascoltare i racconti dei ragazzi. Dopo la visita alla scuola, dove si è intrattenuto circa 20 minuti con alunni e insegnanti, è probabile che Papa Francesco faccia un sopralluogo nella zona rossa di Amatrice, dopo una valutazione delle condizioni di sicurezza. ‘Vi sono vicino e prego per voi’: lo ha detto Papa Francesco in visita ad Amatrice parlando con i terremotati.
