About 3,000 residents fled from their village shelters into temporary camps in Ponnagyun, Buthidaung , Rathe taung and Kyauktaw townships as fighting raged between Myanmar military troops and the Arakan Army (AA) insurgent group in northern Rakhine State on 21 December. The army announced it would suspend all military movements in the country's northern and eastern regions for four months. The AA, founded in 2009 which has not signed the National Ceasefire Agreement (NCA), said that the military deployed heavy weapons and aircraft, including helicopters.
