In this picture taken Monday Aug.15, 2016 French Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, Archbishop of Lyon, attends to a mass for the Feast of the Assumption at the sanctuary of Lourdes, southwestern France. Recent revelations of sexual misconduct and cover-up in the U.S. Catholic Church have revived the sense of betrayal that devastated the American church's credibility after the first wave of scandal hit in 2002. But the U.S. is by no means alone: Revelations of Catholic priests who raped and molested children, and of bishops who covered up for them, have erupted on nearly every continent in recent years.
