Coffins are readied for use in the warehouse of General Funeral Services in Paris, France's biggest undertakers' group, 21 August 2003. French undertakers said today there were around 10,000 more deaths than usual thus far in August, amid claims that several thousand elderly people may have died from the effects of a record-breaking two-week heat wave that hit Europe earlier this month. French President Jacques Chirac, in a nationwide televised speech, today vowed to fix shortcomings in the national health system as he contended with mounting public anger over his absence and over government inaction.
